2001scape skill training is a much different process than that found in later iterations of RuneScape such as RSC Preservation. Below are resources which are intended to educate a player about various methods in which they may gain XP and raise their skill levels, at times accomplishing other goals such as making money in the form of coins. Other reasons to train may include the desire make progress in other goals, prepare for quests/other skills training, or to compete on the hi-score leaderboards.

Melee Combat (Attack, Defense, Strength, Hits)

Low Level Training

Most players will begin training their combat on Chickens. Eventually it is possible to move onto killing stronger monsters like Goblins, Rats, Muggers, Men, and others.

Mid Level Training

Players with melee stats that are 40+ will find training on the Pirates in the Asgarnia Ice Dungeon to be rewarding. Killing Chickens for rawmeat at the farm near Falador and then cooking at the Range in Port Sarim will provide plenty of food.

High Level Training

Players with combat stats 70+ may try fighting strong monsters such as the Ice Giant or Moss Giant, although the rates acquired from these monsters will be low due to their high health and tendency to hit the player, quickly reducing large amounts of health

Ranged

Training the Ranged skill will require the player to have a suitable weapon and a sufficient amount of ranged projectiles/ammo. These may be purchased from shops, other players, or received as drops from killing monsters. When arrows are fired at a monster they can be then picked up by the player who shot them, and they will also be able to be picked up by other players after a long enough time has gone by. Players who are interested in quickly training their skill will often skip the step of picking up the arrows that they have fired, as it is often faster or more efficient to simply purchase a large amount of them.

Ranged Weapons:

  • Longbow
  • Shortbow
  • Crossbow
  • Phoenix Crossbow

Ranged Projectiles/Ammo:

  • Arrows - may only be used with Short/Longbows
  • Bolts - may only be used with Crossbows

Acquiring Ranged ammo/projectiles

Gathering a large stock of ammo is necessary and most efficiently completed by purchasing it from the Archery Shop in Varrock, although some monsters will drop them, with some being more efficient than others when fighting them for this purpose.

Purchasing from the shop

Arrows may be purchased for coins at the shop in Varrock. There is a stock of 200 and the price goes up slightly after the first 50 have been bought. If a player is trying to be efficient and conserve coins, they should only purchase the first 50 in stock, allowing them to replenish back to 200 before continuing to buy another 50, and repeating.

Acquiring by fighting enemies

Several enemies will occasionally drop arrows and bolts, though few are worth fighting for this purpose:

  • Pirates- drop arrows occasionally and are very likely 20001scape's best source of Ranged projectiles from defeating monsters.

Training Ranged

Once the player has a sufficient amount of arrows or bolts, they will be free to train the Ranged skills for long periods of time. Doing this will require the player to find a sufficient spot from which they can shoot an NPC without becoming directly engaged in combat, as this will force the player into melee combat, which will not grant Ranged XP. In order to avoid this, it's often necessary that the player fight enemies which can be "blocked" by 1 tile of a suitable scenery object, such as a fence, table or rock.

There are several notable such spots where training the Ranged skill is made significantly easier by the placement of such objects, and players should note that their findings may be different than what is written in this guide, depending on their playstyle or competition for resources:

Low Level (Level 1-40) training
  • Chickens - Shooting the Chickens at the locations in Falador, Lumbridge (2 spots), or the Champions Guild will provide constant Ranged XP. You will also acquire plenty of PrayGood/Evil XP if burying bones and Cooking XP if cooking the rawmeat which is dropped.

If players opt to cook the meat that is dropped, they may also train their Firemaking and Woodcutting skills in order to make a fire for cooking. If cooking without a fire, it is most efficient to fight Chickens at the Champions Guild (requires 20 Influence to gain entry and collect the meat) or at the location in Falador, due to the close proximity of a Range to cook on.

Low-Mid Level training (Level 25-50)
  • Dwarves - In the northwestern part of the Dwarven Mine near the General Shop there are 4 anvils and many Dwarves. It's possible to angle yourself behind the anvils, Buffer, or Minecart, where you can then train your Ranged skill on Dwarves. It is also possible to sell the valuable drops at the nearby General Shop for small amounts of coins, and players may also train their Smithing skill while collecting the Bronze and Iron bars drops.
  • Barbarians - At Barbarians Village there is a building with many tables. It's possible to get a clean shot on the surrounding Barbarians who spawn inside of the building. There is also a more powerful NPC called Gunthor the Brave (level 37 combat) who can be fought, though he is best avoided if a players Ranged level is not 35+
Mid-High Level training (Level 45-50+)
  • Black Knights - Inside the Black Knights Fortress near Ice Mountain and the Dwarven Mine (requires starting the Spy Quest, a Medium Bronze Helmet, and an Iron Chainbody to gain entrance)

Thieving

Thieving cannot be trained or used in anyway, although some experience is granted for completing the Spy Quest (known in later iterations of RuneScape as Black Knight's fortress)

Influence

Influence was the first iteration of the system which later became Quest Points in RuneScape Classic. It is increased by completing quests.

Higher influence gives the player better prices from the Al Kharid silk trader and Varrock fur trader, although neither fur or silk have any use in 2001scape.

Maximum Influence

Players who wish to have their Influence at the highest possible level should take care to complete the available quests in the following order:

  1. Ernest the Chicken, Romeo & Juliet
  2. Prince Ali Rescue, Black Knights Fortress
  3. Demon Slayer, Goblin Diplomacy, Vampire Slayer

Completing them in the wrong order will not stop the player from accessing the Champions Guild and the associated content, their Influence level will simply be capped at a lower than maximum value.

Pray Good/Evil

Both skills train at the same time when burying bones, independent of the players particular choice. There are no Big bones or Dragon bones in 2001scape. Those who are seeking to gain a high level in these skills will require will be required to exhibit extreme patience, as the rate at which levels are gained drops off significantly, with a dramatic decrease even as low as level 30 PrayGood/Evil skills.

  • Train this while training other combat skills
  • If power training: Have a high combat skill, and the best possible weapon you can get. Killing chickens or anything you can defeat in 1-2 shot, who spawn in a high concentration, while you focus on burying bones-- is one of the best chances you have to gain a decent rate of XP/hr

Good/Evil Magic

Cooking

Players will find training their cooking skill to be important, as it directly governs how much food will heal the player. This is unique to 2001scape, and was changed in later iterations of the game, such as RSC Preservation.

It is possible to cook food on a Range or a fire. Cooking on a fire will allow cooking meat in any environment, so long as the player has logs and a tinderbox.

Quest Rewards

Completing the Cooks' Assistant quest will award the player XP in the Cooking skill based on their current skill level. Players who wish to achieve the highest possible XP bonus from completing the quest should wait to do until they are a suitably high level. Doing so can save large amounts of time by gaining a large XP reward at a high skill level.

Chicken Meat

Killing Chickens will be one of the best ways to begin training the Cooking skill.

Falador farm

This may be the best place to kill and cook chicken other than the Champions Guild. In nearby Port Sarim there is a range to cook on after filling an inventory of rawmeat.

Lumbridge farm

There are 2 places to kill Chickens in the Lumbridge area, however players will need to light their own fires to cook and stay efficient, unless they wish to travel to a range.

Tailoring

This skill cannot be trained or used in any way in 2001scape. It would later become the Crafting skill.

Woodcutting

Firemaking

Crafting

Smithing

Mining

Herblaw

There is no way to use or train this skill in 2001scape.
